About the Hotel

Sumiya Means: Peace, Tranquility and Longevity Place.

Great gardens, huge trees and Japanese design are part of the imperial mansion ordered to be built in the mid-50s of the last century by one of the richest women of that time: Barbara Hutton Woolworth, heiress to the chain of stores named after her last name.

According to the official history, the house was completed in 1959 and the owner's seventh and last marriage took place there, with the Vietnamese prince Raymond Doan Vinh Na Champassak.

Fond of the entire oriental universe, Hutton ordered, for the building of Sumiya, a replica of the Kabuki Theater that exists in the Japanese city of Kyoto, made with imported materials, which includes an Ofuro bath, where the «purification ritual of the actor was performed before entering the scene», as well as a zen garden, made of sand and stones brought from seven different quarries in Japan.
